After graduation, he worked for the government department and then became an accountant before joining the Chinese Football Association (CFA) as its vice president.
In 1988, Cao Yunding joined Shanghai Shenhua FC as the manager of their youth academy. Under his guidance, the club rose to prominence, winning numerous domestic and international championships. In 1993, Cao Yunding took over as head coach, where he led the team to achieve great success, including reaching the quarterfinals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
However, the journey did not always go smoothly. Despite his achievements, Cao Yunding faced criticism for his management style and his decision to cut corners during the early stages of the 2000s. This led to his resignation in 2003, leaving the club without a manager for three years.
After his departure, Cao Yunding continued to work as a consultant, advising other clubs and academies. However, his role diminished after the death of his first wife, Wang Liangqian, in 2005. In 2011, he left the club again, this time voluntarily, citing health reasons.
Despite these challenges, Cao Yunding's legacy is undeniable. He was known for his ability to adapt and innovate, leading Shanghai Shenhua FC to become one of the top teams in China. His approach to coaching, which emphasized player development and teamwork, has inspired many young players to pursue careers in football.
